What is a Ramp Test? A ramp test is exactly what it sounds like – an athlete starts at a given wattage (typically 100w) and ‘ramps’ up their power every 1 to 3 minutes (typically in 20w increments) until failure is reached. Here is what I do with my athletes: Warm up for 10-15 minutes.

How long does a ramp test take?

It begins with a really easy 5-minute warmup and then every minute thereafter it gets slightly harder, and typically takes about 25 minutes to complete (including warmup and cooldown).

Spend a few minutes before the test envisioning yourself pushing hard and feeling powerful. Being able to push yourself to your absolute limit on a ramp test, or maintaining a high, steady power level throughout a 20-minute test requires a huge amount of focus. Cue up a good playlist with your favourite music.

If an RCD trips i.e. switches to the ‘OFF’ position you can: Try resetting the RCD by toggling the RCD switch back to the ‘ON’ position.
